When to Use a Primer with Aluminum-Coated Asphalt Roofing Membrane
Using a primer is recommended whenever additional surface preparation is needed to ensure proper adhesion and long-lasting performance of the aluminum-coated asphalt roofing membrane.
A primer helps seal porous surfaces, bind dust and debris, and create a tacky base that allows the membrane to bond more effectively.
Porous or rough surfaces
Concrete, brick, cinder block, or bare wood
Dusty or chalky roofs

High heat, cold, or humidity environments

Installation Support
Simple enough to install yourself. Follow these steps for a professional-grade, watertight repair.
Safety First
- ·Work on a dry day with no rain in the forecast
- ·Wear gloves, safety glasses, and non-slip shoes
- ·Use a roof harness
Inspect & Prepare the Area
- ·Remove loose shingles, debris, and damaged material
- ·Surface must be dry and structurally sound
Clean the Surface
- ·Brush off dust, granules, and moisture
- ·Wipe with a clean cloth if needed
- ·Let area fully dry before priming
Apply Asphalt Primer (When Necessary)
- ·Use a brush or roller
- ·Apply primer 2–4 inches beyond the hole on all sides
- ·Allow primer to flash off until tacky (10–20 minutes)

Cut the Membrane Patch
- ·Cut membrane large enough to overlap the hole
- ·Minimum overlap: 4–6 inches on all sides
- ·Use a 36-inch wide roll for larger holes
Apply the Membrane
- ·Center membrane over the hole
- ·Press down starting from the center outward
- ·Ensure aluminum side faces up
Seal and Press
- ·Firmly press membrane edges by hand or with a roller
- ·Remove air bubbles and wrinkles
- ·Make sure edges are fully bonded
Final Inspection
- ·Confirm full adhesion
- ·No exposed decking
- ·No lifted edges or gaps
